New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the mass shootings at a mosque in Christchurch as one of the darkest days for the country.

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand Prime Minister, described the shootings as extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence and said that the shootings have plunged the country into one of its “darkest days”.

“What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities New Zealand is their home they are us,” the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday.

She added that the person who committed this violent act has no place here as she asked people to stay indoors.

On Friday, gunman opened fire at a mosque in New Zealand killing many worshippers and forcing the city of Christchurch into lockdown as police launched a massive manhunt.

New Zealand media reported that between nine and 27 people were killed, but the death toll could not be confirmed. Police said multiple fatalities had occurred at two mosques, but it was unclear how many attackers were involved.

Video footage widely circulated on social media, apparently taken by a gunman and posted online live as the attack unfolded, showed him driving to one mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside.

Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay huddled on the floor of the mosque, the video showed.
