Chris Gayle remained one run short of his 7th hundred in the Indian Premier League and his 2nd for Kings XI Punjab against his old team Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mohali on Saturday. This would have been Gayle’s 1st hundred of the 2019 Indian Premier League.
Chris Gayle is now only the 2nd batsman to remain unbeaten on 99 in the IPL after Suresh Raina of Chennai Super Kings.
Chris Gayle would have become the 5th batsman to hit a hundred in the 2019 Indian Premier League after David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals) and KL Rahul (Kings XI Punjab).
Gayle was dropped on 83 by Virat Kohli off Umesh Yadav and he celebrated that slice of luck with a six. With one ball remaining in the KXIP innings, Gayle needed a six to get to triple figures but he only managed a boundary and finished on 99 not out.
Gayle blazed away to his fifty off 28 balls before slowing down after KXIP suffered a few quick setbacks. KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan and Sam Curran departed without making much impact and it was left to Chris Gayle to bat till the end.

Chris Gayle, who debuted in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore and was massively successful there. It was during his stint at RCB when he smashed the all-time IPL best of 175 not out against Pune Warriors. However, he was released by RCB after 2017.
RCB did not even bid for Chris Gayle in the player auction thereafter. He would later go on to say that he was disappointed since he was their biggest draw. “They wanted me in the team and I was told that I will be retained. But they never called back after that. So that gave me the impression that they didn’t want me and it’s fine,” Gayle had told the Times of India.
Chris Gayle hit 5 hundreds for Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2011 to 2017.
Chris Gayle was bought by Kings XI Punjab at his base price and he hit 3 fifties and 1 hundred for them in 2018. He has continued his red-hot from in 2019. Before his unbeaten 99 on Saturday, Chris Gayle had hit two fifties – a 79 against Rajasthan Royals and a 63 against Mumbai Indians.
Chris Gayle is the fastest to 4000 IPL runs and is the only man to hit 300 sixes in the Indian Premier League.
Chris Gayle had hit 2 hundreds in 2011 and 1 each in 2012 and 2013. He had a poor seasn in 2014 when he managed only 196 runs from 9 matches but roared back to form with his 5th IPL hundred next year.
After 2 quiet years, Chris Gayle hammered an aggressive hundred for KXIP against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018 before coming close against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday.
